Strategy Learns Its Index Fate on Wednesday. Here Is What $2.8 Billion in Passive Selling Actually Looks Like.

Four days. That is the gap between today and the moment Strategy finds out whether it stays in MSCI’s Global Investable Market Indexes or gets removed from them at the November 30 close. MSCI publishes the final list of affected companies on Wednesday, November 11. Everything before that is positioning.

Market Snapshot

Bitcoin is trading near $76,000 this Saturday morning after slipping from a weekly open of roughly $78,354. US spot bitcoin ETFs have shed about $1.28 billion over November’s first five trading days, including about $430 million on Thursday alone, keeping sentiment cautious. MSTR sits around $129, more than 48% off its 52-week high of $249.96, with daily momentum measures well below neutral and the stock trading beneath all major moving averages.

The Stock in Focus: MSTR

What happened: MSCI adopted new non-operating company eligibility rules on October 15. The framework assesses companies using a core operating-assets test followed by five financial ratios; failing four or more of those five makes a company ineligible. Strategy appeared in MSCI’s earlier simulation marked for deletion alongside Japan’s Metaplanet. The final, binding list drops Wednesday.

Why it matters: Strategy has told investors that funds tracking MSCI indexes hold roughly 13 million MSTR shares, equal to about 3.1% of its basic shares outstanding and close to 60% of its stated 30-day average trading volume. JPMorgan has estimated that confirmed removal could force passive funds to unload approximately $2.8 billion worth of stock during the rebalancing window between November 11 and November 30. If other major index providers follow MSCI’s lead, that figure could extend to $8.8 billion or beyond.

Strategy has pushed back hard, arguing in a late-August submission to MSCI that bitcoin constitutes an operating segment under US GAAP and that the forced-selling figure amounts to less than one average trading day’s volume. One analyst, Adrian Morris, estimated the $2.8 billion would represent roughly 96% of one day’s volume but only 0.5% of year-to-date turnover. That math may be right; it still does not change the mechanical obligation index-tracking funds face if the deletion is confirmed.

What to watch: The November 11 list settles the eligibility question, but it does not set the price. The 19-day window before the November 30 effective date is where the demand shock, if any, actually lands. Traders should watch MSTR’s volume and premium-to-net-asset-value in that window more than on announcement day itself.

Sector Watch

Bitcoin treasury companies sit at the center of this. Metaplanet, the Tokyo-listed firm, is also on the provisional deletion list. SharpLink was placed on a watchlist in MSCI’s earlier simulation. The broader question is whether MSCI’s framework becomes a template: FTSE Russell and S&P Dow Jones have not adopted comparable screens, but their silence so far is not a guarantee.

Catalyst Calendar

  • Wednesday, November 11: MSCI publishes final November index constituent list. Confirmed deletions take effect at the November 30 close.
  • November 30 close: Index rebalancing deadline. Passive funds tracking affected MSCI benchmarks must have adjusted holdings by this date.

Risk Radar

The obvious risk is confirmation on Wednesday, followed by 19 trading days of steady passive selling into what is already a soft bitcoin backdrop. A second, less-discussed risk is bitcoin itself: MSTR’s capital-raising model depends on issuing equity at a premium to its bitcoin holdings, and that premium has compressed sharply as the stock has fallen from last year’s highs. Index removal would not touch Strategy’s roughly 200,000-plus BTC holdings, but it would reduce the passive demand that has historically supported the premium.

The Cheat Sheet

  • Top Theme: Scheduled flow risk from a rules-based index change, with the trigger date four days out.
  • Stock to Watch: MSTR. The November 11 announcement is the clearest binary event on the calendar this week.
  • Sector to Watch: Bitcoin treasury companies. Wednesday’s list affects Metaplanet and potentially others beyond Strategy.
  • Biggest Risk: Confirmation plus a continued weak bitcoin price compresses MSTR’s equity premium, crimping the company’s ability to fund further bitcoin purchases through share issuance.
  • Biggest Opportunity: If Strategy is not on the final list, or if MSCI applies its two-period buffer and defers removal, the relief trade in MSTR could be sharp given how much pessimism is already priced in at current levels.
  • One Thing to Remember: Index removal is not delisting. MSTR stays on Nasdaq either way. The issue is mechanical selling by funds that must mirror a benchmark, and that selling has a known deadline: November 30.
