Apple Sold Out the iPhone Duo Fast. November 2 Is the Test.

The foldable launch drew huge demand, but next week’s earnings will exclude Duo sales.

Apple’s first foldable phone sold out much of its initial store inventory on October 23, the day it went on sale. Online delivery windows slid to late January within minutes of preorders opening the previous week. The company called demand “nothing short of extraordinary.” The stock touched a record $351.73 on Friday before closing at $347.73, briefly pushing Apple past Nvidia as the world’s most valuable public company.

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 and reaches $3,199 for the 2TB configuration. It is also an early challenge for Apple’s new CEO John Ternus, who unveiled the phone in September, shortly after taking charge on September 1. Marking the company’s most radical reinvention in the iPhone’s nearly two-decade history, the Duo is a major bet that Apple can establish itself in a category that has remained a niche so far.

The market math is straightforward. IDC expects Apple to ship more than 17 million foldable iPhones by 2027, capturing roughly 40% of the global foldables market. Worldwide smartphone shipments are on pace for a 16.7% decline in 2026 as the memory crisis hits full force, according to IDC, while total market value still grows. IDC and other industry trackers expect foldables to be a relative bright spot, with Apple’s entry a meaningful swing factor for the category.

The supply picture already forced Apple’s hand. Apple has reportedly asked suppliers to raise Duo orders by 30%, with delivery dates stretching to late January. That kind of constraint matters for how Q1 fiscal 2027 revenue shapes up, but it doesn’t help the number that arrives November 2.

Apple reports quarterly earnings on November 2, but those results will not include Duo sales because the period concluded at the end of September. The report will instead reflect early sales of iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models, which debuted September 18. Wall Street is split on what that means. Wedbush’s Dan Ives sees a path to $400; JPMorgan holds at $360; Loop Capital cut its target to $330 with a Hold rating.

The tension is real. Early reviews are mixed, highlighting design strengths but some functional compromises. Several prominent reviewers recommended against the Duo for many Apple customers. A $2,000 device built on a folding display will always carry a different risk profile than a mass-market phone.

The November 2 report sets the baseline. Fiscal Q4 numbers will tell investors how much early iPhone 18 demand Apple captured before the Duo reshaped expectations. Guidance for the December quarter, the first one where Duo sales actually count, is where this trade lives or dies. The sellout is a signal. The margin commentary next Thursday will be the answer.
