Viking’s Obesity Drug Can Work on a Monthly Schedule

Tuesday’s data didn’t just show weight loss. It showed weight loss you don’t have to chase every week.

Most obesity drugs demand weekly compliance. The question the market has been waiting for Viking Therapeutics to answer is whether VK2735 could hold its results when patients stop injecting quite so often. On Tuesday, Viking answered it.

During the first 21 weeks of the trial, weekly dosing produced weight loss of 16% to 19% compared with roughly 0% for placebo. Patients who then switched to less frequent dosing maintained up to 97% of that loss. Those receiving injections every other week retained about 97% of their average weight reduction, while patients on monthly dosing maintained roughly 90%, compared with 61% for those switched to placebo. That gap between 90% and 61% is the number that moved the stock.

Viking also reported that patients on the 17.5-milligram weekly dose achieved approximately 22% placebo-adjusted weight loss across the full 33-week study. For context, Eli Lilly’s tirzepatide, the current benchmark, uses the same dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor mechanism as VK2735. Viking is now showing comparable efficacy numbers at Phase 2, with less frequent maintenance dosing that neither Zepbound nor Wegovy has established in a clinical trial setting.

Why Dosing Frequency Is the Actual Competitive Lever

Patient adherence is one of the chronic weak points of the GLP-1 category. Weekly injections create friction. Monthly or biweekly maintenance would reduce that friction substantially, and the tolerability profile amplifies the case. Analysts described VK2735’s safety and tolerability as impressively clean, with low gastrointestinal side effects and minimal discontinuations. Truist analyst Gregory Renza called the results a best-case scenario.

Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk shares dipped modestly in response, as Viking begins to look like a legitimate challenger to their weight-loss market position. That reaction is modest, and it should be: both companies have entrenched commercial machines, physician relationships, and manufacturing scale that Viking cannot match from a clinical-stage position. What the selloff signals is that the market is now pricing a third serious competitor into the GLP-1 field.

What Viking Is Building Toward

The injectable VANQUISH Phase 3 program is already running. Viking has said VANQUISH-1 is enrolling, and VANQUISH-2 enrollment has been completed. The oral formulation is the longer-horizon bet. Viking has said it plans to initiate Phase 3 trials with the oral VK2735 formulation in the fourth quarter of this year, positioning it to potentially become the first orally available dual GLP-1/GIP agonist on the market. That would be a genuine differentiator against Lilly and Novo, neither of which has an approved oral dual agonist.

Viking holds roughly $502 million in cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments with total liabilities of about $113.6 million, giving it the runway to fund both programs without immediately returning to equity markets. That balance sheet is a real asset for a company at this stage.

The Risks Are Real

Tuesday’s data is Phase 2, not Phase 3. Weight loss trials at this scale have failed to replicate in registrational studies before. The analyst consensus 12-month price target is about $94.8, a roughly 215% premium to where the stock closed Monday at $30.11, which tells you how much future success is already baked into institutional models. Short interest near 20% of the float remains elevated and sets up continued volatility in either direction as Phase 3 data arrives. Insider selling has also outpaced buying over the past twelve months by a wide margin.

The competitive field is widening, not narrowing. Amgen’s MariTide, Roche’s CT-388, and several oral GLP-1 candidates from Novo and Lilly are all advancing simultaneously. Viking needs Phase 3 to confirm what Phase 2 is suggesting.

What to Watch

Two catalysts define the next twelve months for VKTX. First, oral Phase 3 initiation in Q4 2026 will confirm the company can execute on its dual-formulation ambition. Second, VANQUISH data, expected in 2027, will tell investors whether 16-19% weight loss in a few hundred patients holds up across thousands. Until then, the maintenance study bought Viking something more valuable than a roughly 36% single-day gain: it earned the drug a seat at the table with Lilly and Novo, on a question the market had not yet seen answered.
