Palantir Is the Only Pentagon AI Stock You Can Buy

ChatGPT and Grok just landed in GenAI.mil. Palantir turns that into decisions.

The Pentagon flipped a significant switch on August 31. The Department of Defense’s GenAI.mil platform added two new artificial intelligence tools, giving more than 3 million military and civilian personnel access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mil and Starshield AI’s Grok for Government alongside the Google Gemini tool that started it all. The headlines write themselves: ChatGPT and Grok are now inside the U.S. military. But the more important investor question is quieter. Who actually captures the economics when millions of service members start using frontier AI every day?

OpenAI and xAI are private. Google’s defense revenue disappears inside a roughly $2 trillion enterprise. The one publicly traded company positioned to monetize what happens after a service member opens a chat window is Palantir Technologies.

Why This Stock Now

GenAI.mil is a productivity layer. Personnel can build repeatable workflows for tasks such as travel forms or contracting opportunities, while keeping conversations and files together over longer projects. That is useful, but it is not where battlefield decisions get made. Those decisions flow through Palantir’s Maven Smart System, the platform that sits beneath the chatbots and connects sensor feeds, targeting workflows, and intelligence databases into a single operational picture.

Palantir has moved from a data vendor to the decision layer of the U.S. and allied militaries. Its Maven Smart System is built on the company’s Artificial Intelligence Platform, and Pentagon leadership has said Maven is being moved toward formal “program of record” status by the end of fiscal year 2026, which ends September 30, 2026. That signals lasting, budgeted demand rather than a pilot that could vanish.

Palantir is stacking up big “ceiling” numbers across Army enterprise agreements, Maven-related work, Open DAGIR, and intelligence community programs, and is becoming a default data integration layer for parts of the DoD, the company that connects sensors, databases, and analytical tools into a unified operational picture. ChatGPT Mil handles much of the administrative surface. Palantir aims to own the operational depth beneath it.

The Financials Back the Thesis

In early August 2026, Palantir reported second-quarter results showing revenue of $1.935 billion and net income of about $1.062 billion, alongside raised full-year 2026 revenue guidance to between $8.150 and $8.158 billion. U.S. government revenue increased 90% year over year to $809 million in the quarter, an acceleration that predates the GenAI.mil expansion reaching full scale. Palantir’s 93% revenue growth is far above most large enterprise software peers, and it is generating GAAP net income at scale.

With a market cap of roughly $462 billion, PLTR trades near $180 per share. That is not cheap. The stock carries a price-to-earnings ratio of about 154. Investors paying that multiple are betting the company’s government entanglement deepens faster than the valuation compresses, which is a reasonable bet when the Pentagon is onboarding AI at department-wide scale and Palantir sits in critical workflows underneath it.

What Could Go Wrong

The valuation leaves no room for execution stumbles. Analysts have pointed to intensifying competition in AI software and the risk that lower barriers to entry could weigh on Palantir’s pricing power and long-term margins. GenAI.mil itself is a mild competitive headwind: the more the DoD standardizes on chatbot interfaces from OpenAI and Google, the more it could reduce dependency on custom Palantir tooling for routine tasks.

There is also the Anthropic wrinkle. Anthropic was an early frontier AI company to deploy its models in classified environments, and Palantir and Anthropic announced a partnership with Amazon Web Services in November 2024 to bring Claude into defense and intelligence workflows through Palantir. In July 2025, Anthropic said the Department of Defense awarded it a two-year agreement with a $200 million ceiling through the Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office. A federal judge ruled in late August 2026 that the Pentagon’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal, which could eventually restore Claude to broader DoD channels and reshape the competitive picture. That is a risk worth watching, though Palantir’s AIP is designed to be model-agnostic and can integrate multiple model families through APIs.

The Bottom Line

The Pentagon’s AI expansion is real, accelerating, and well-funded. The model providers getting headlines this week, OpenAI, xAI, and Google, are either private or too large for defense to move the needle. Palantir is the stock where the DoD’s AI ambitions are most directly reflected in revenue, margins, and contract opportunities. At a rich valuation, it demands strong execution. The evidence so far suggests it is delivering exactly that.
