OpenAI Wants $1.4 Trillion. Anthropic Is Going Public.

Two of the most consequential AI companies in the world are each raising capital this week, and they are doing it in opposite directions. OpenAI is in talks with investors to raise at least $30 billion in a pre-IPO funding round at a valuation of roughly $1.4 trillion, according to Bloomberg. Meanwhile, Anthropic filed a confidential S-1 draft with the SEC on June 1, 2026. The question is not which company is bigger. The question is which one is pricing risk honestly.

The #1 Stock to Buy BEFORE the Next Big IPO

The billionaire founder – dubbed “the next Elon Musk” – confirmed it on CNBC… his company is “definitely going to be a publicly traded company.”

But here’s the thing – most investors will be locked out until AFTER it goes public.

Not you.

I’ve found a “backdoor” that lets everyday Americans grab a pre-IPO stake right now.

The Bull Case for OpenAI’s Private Round

The revenue trajectory is genuinely hard to dismiss. Recent reporting indicates OpenAI’s annualized revenue run rate is approaching $70 billion, up more than 70% since the start of the third quarter. That kind of acceleration, driven largely by AI coding tools, is not manufactured. OpenAI’s last round, in March, closed at $122 billion led by SoftBank, Amazon, and Nvidia at an $852 billion valuation. The new ask of $1.4 trillion, pre-money, reflects 18 months of compounding growth rather than pure speculation.

The company’s own internal forecasts project revenue rising from $36 billion in 2026 to $350 billion in 2030, according to the Financial Times. Investors who believe that path is credible can argue the current valuation is catching up to the business, not running ahead of it. Investor demand is reportedly driving the round. That is not nothing. When sophisticated capital lines up without being chased, it usually reflects conviction about the underlying.

The Bear Case: The Numbers Behind the Headline

Here is where the optimism earns scrutiny. Public reporting has described audited financial documents showing OpenAI posted a net loss of about $38.5 billion in 2025 on $13.07 billion in revenue. Bulls correctly note that a large portion of that figure appears tied to a fair-value accounting adjustment, and that excluding it would imply a meaningfully smaller loss. But the operating loss, the one that reflects the actual cost of running the business, was still a substantial figure. Reporting on those same documents put operating losses at $20.92 billion in 2025, up from $8.78 billion in 2024, despite surging revenue.

The forward picture is not gentler. Internal forecasts reviewed by the Financial Times show OpenAI expecting about $278 billion in negative free cash flow from 2026 through 2030, driven almost entirely by computing and infrastructure costs the company now estimates at roughly $856 billion over that period. Today’s $30 billion round is not the last ask. It is the next one.

Then there is the IPO itself. In recent interviews, CEO Sam Altman has said OpenAI will not go public in 2026, citing safety work, with a listing not expected until 2027. The new round is being described as a bridge round to provide capital in place of an IPO. Private investors are being asked to accept a 2027 promise in place of a 2026 one, at a valuation far above March.

Anthropic’s Bet on Public Discipline

Anthropic’s choice to file for an IPO carries its own risks, but it also carries a kind of intellectual honesty. Reporting indicates Anthropic told investors it expects its first-ever quarterly operating profit in Q2 2026 on revenue of $10.9 billion, up from $4.8 billion in Q1. Separately, Bloomberg-reported figures cited by Axios indicate Anthropic’s annualized revenue run rate exceeded $65 billion by the end of July 2026. Public markets will see the full prospectus, the real risk factors, the complete cost structure. That is an uncomfortable test, but it is the right one at this scale.

Where the Evidence Leads

OpenAI’s revenue momentum is real, and the investor demand for this round is genuine. But a $1.4 trillion private valuation, granted to a company projecting $278 billion in cash burn through the end of the decade, means private investors are absorbing opacity that public shareholders would not tolerate. Every time OpenAI defers its IPO and returns to private markets at a higher mark, the gap between the price being paid and the information being disclosed grows wider.

Anthropic, whatever its own cost challenges, is choosing accountability over convenience. That discipline matters. The edge in intellectual honesty belongs to the company submitting its financials to public scrutiny, not the one raising $30 billion with a 2027 promise attached.

Watch the Anthropic prospectus when it becomes public. The detail in that document will set the benchmark against which OpenAI’s eventual filing gets judged, and may be the first honest price discovery the AI sector has seen at this scale.
