Lumentum’s Lasers Are Sold Out Until 2029. The Stock Fell 10%.

The CEO says demand exceeds supply into 2029. That gap is the trade.

Why This Stock Now

Lumentum Holdings closed Monday, October 12, 2026 at $995.41, down roughly 10% in a single session and off nearly 13% from its October high of $1,143. The selloff came on heavy volume, with about 6.3 million shares trading, roughly 1.25 times the one-month average. The decline is striking because the fundamental story the company put into the market just three days earlier was arguably the strongest demand confirmation in the entire AI infrastructure sector.

Lumentum Holdings’ optical components are “completely sold out” through early 2029 on demand from tech companies clamoring for faster AI data centers, according to its chief executive officer. CEO Michael Hurlston said this in a Tokyo interview on Friday, October 9, 2026. Six months earlier, the sold-out horizon was 2028. In April 2026, Lumentum expected to be fully sold out through 2028. By October, that window had stretched to early 2029. That is a supply constraint getting worse, not better.

The Business

Lumentum makes indium phosphide lasers and related optical components that power high-speed optical links inside and between AI data centers. Every large GPU cluster needs optics to move data at the speeds modern training and inference require. As AI systems scale, the distance data must travel grows, and the speed it must travel at increases. Every new GPU rack needs more optical links to move data at the rates AI workloads demand. When supplier capacity for those links is already committed for more than two years, optical component availability can become a critical scheduling constraint for new large-scale AI infrastructure.

To chase demand, Lumentum has boosted capacity at its key plant in the greater Tokyo area by 12-fold over the past two years, and plans to invest at least $350 million in that facility and a neighboring site. Nvidia committed to a multibillion-dollar purchase agreement with future capacity access rights, and also said it is investing $2 billion in Lumentum to support R&D, future capacity, and operations. That kind of capital from that kind of customer is not a speculative bet. It is a hedge against a bottleneck Nvidia cannot afford to have.

Why Wall Street Is Paying Attention

Lumentum is unable to meet about 70% of demand for some products through next year, and won’t be able to address 30% of demand for some other products through 2028. That is an extraordinary demand signal. Revenue for the most recent reported quarter was $1.01 billion, up 109% year-over-year. The selloff comes despite recent analyst optimism. Over the past seven days, Lumentum received one target raise with no cuts, suggesting Wall Street’s fundamental view on the company remains intact even as technical factors drive near-term weakness.

What’s Driving the Opportunity

Lumentum’s order book is booked solid through early 2029, yet its stock is leading the AI optics group lower. When the most visible demand story in the group takes the hardest hit, something worth watching is happening inside the selloff.

The selloff looks sector-wide and valuation-driven, not fundamental. Sector peers fell in tandem, with Ciena down about 10% on Monday and Viavi down about 4.7%, pointing to broader concerns rather than company-specific issues. Institutions reassessing high-multiple AI infrastructure exposure drove the move, not any new information about Lumentum’s customers or order book.

What Could Go Wrong

The valuation is legitimately stretched. Lumentum’s price-to-sales ratio is around 30 as of Monday, October 12, 2026, far above its pre-AI-cycle range. The company also reported a GAAP net loss in its most recent quarter, and new manufacturing capacity takes years to bring online, which means near-term revenue can only grow as fast as the existing factory base allows.

Insider activity also leans cautious, with no open-market insider purchases reported over the past 12 months and roughly $176 million in open-market insider sales over that same period. Insider selling under a 10b5-1 plan is not the same as a vote of no confidence, but it adds to the caution warranted at current multiples.

The Bottom Line

Lumentum is sitting at a chokepoint in AI infrastructure. Optical connectivity is not optional at the scale hyperscalers are building, new capacity takes years to add, and the company’s CEO says demand is running beyond supply into early 2029. The roughly 10% pullback puts the stock closer to a level where the long-term demand case starts to outweigh the short-term valuation concern. This is not a cheap stock. It is a structurally scarce one, which in this environment may matter more.
