Tech Mahindra Surged 18.2% Last Week. AI Was Supposed to Kill It.

Indian software stocks just taught emerging-market investors what happens when a feared disruption arrives more slowly than expected.

For most of 2026, the trade on Indian IT was straightforward: sell it. The combination of AI disruption fears, sustained foreign investor selling, and US macro concerns had created one of the worst starts to a calendar year for Indian IT stocks in years. From its peak of 46,089 in December 2024, the Nifty IT index fell about 44% to its late-June/early-July 2026 trough. The fear was structural, not cyclical: that agentic AI coding tools would hollow out the labor-arbitrage model that built firms like TCS, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra into global businesses.

Last week, those companies had other ideas.

The Nifty IT index finished the week ending October 16 with an 11.72% surge, marking its best weekly gain in about 18 years. Several of the 10 index constituents ended the week with double-digit gains, with Tech Mahindra leading the pack after surging about 18.2%. The contrast was stark: the Nasdaq Composite lost about 4.5% during the same week, while India’s leading technology stocks recorded double-digit gains.

What the Earnings Actually Said

The catalyst was not a macro turn. It was Q2 FY27 results that refused to confirm the apocalypse.

Tata Consultancy Services reported consolidated revenue of Rs. 73,188 crore in Q2 FY27, up 11.2% year-on-year, while net profit increased about 15% to Rs. 13,884 crore. TCS also said on its earnings call that annualised AI revenue had crossed $3.1 billion in the quarter and had crossed 10% of overall revenue. That is not a company being displaced by AI. It is a company billing for it.

HCL Technologies’ revenue reached Rs. 35,620 crore, up 11.5% year-on-year, with net profit increasing 21.2% to Rs. 5,132 crore. HCLTech also highlighted advanced AI revenue of $219 million in Q2 FY27, with 78% year-on-year growth in constant-currency terms.

Tech Mahindra’s numbers were the most striking. The company reported consolidated revenue of Rs. 16,180.2 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, with profit after tax of Rs. 1,585.6 crore. It also reported EBIT up 40.5% year-on-year. Key initiatives included AI partnerships and the launch of Indus Terra, described by the company as India’s foundational educational LLM, a 30 billion-parameter model built with Nvidia and AWS. These are the moves of a firm running toward AI, not fleeing it.

What This Means for Your Portfolio

The week’s price action carries a specific lesson for investors who hold emerging-market equity funds. Indian IT names, particularly the US-listed ADRs of Infosys (INFY) and Wipro (WIT), carry meaningful weight in EM indices. For much of 2026, that weight was a drag. The sector had been plagued by fears of AI-driven disruption, concerns over interest rates, and sustained foreign investor selling, dragging several constituents to multi-year lows. The Q2 results shifted that framing in a week.

The more durable point is about valuation and positioning. One widely shared valuation view argued that the Nifty IT index’s 2026 drawdown may have already priced in a meaningful portion of the threat from AI. That claim explains why a positive earnings surprise could move prices so sharply. When a sector has been sold for a specific reason and that reason proves at least partially wrong, the snapback is not gentle.

A note of caution: even after a week like this, the broader revenue picture remains more subdued than the AI headlines imply. TCS and HCLTech both reported low single-digit growth in US-dollar terms, underscoring the challenge of translating strong AI-related demand into faster overall business growth.

The Wealth Builder Takeaway

The Indian IT story of 2026 illustrates one of the most reliable patterns in long-term investing: markets price feared disruptions early and often harshly, and then correct when reality arrives more gradually than expected. Investors who can distinguish between a structural shift that takes a decade to play out and one that collapses a business model in a year are positioned to find real value in oversold sectors. Indian IT may still face genuine AI headwinds over time. But at the lows, the market was not pricing in adaptation. It was pricing in extinction. Last week, the companies pushed back.
