GE Vernova Lands a Major Off-Grid AI Power Deal

Venture Global's frame agreements for up to sixteen 720 MW units put GEV in the middle of a power build-out the grid cannot handle alone.

Venture Global did not announce a small contract on Thursday, October 15, 2026. It signed power and grid frame agreements with GE Vernova and Baker Hughes Energy Services for up to sixteen new 720 MW power island units and associated power transformer equipment, supporting the continued expansion of its existing behind-the-meter, Island-Mode industrial power network that is not reliant on the grid. Sixteen units. Each one large enough to power a mid-sized city. Subject to customer commitments, market demand, and other commercial considerations, Venture Global said it anticipates it will be able to develop up to 10 gigawatts of compute capacity by the end of 2034 at sites it owns or controls. That is not a data center order. That is a grid replacement strategy, and GE Vernova is the company being paid to build it.

The Business

GE Vernova makes gas turbines, grid equipment, and wind infrastructure. The gas turbine business is where the money is right now, and it is accelerating faster than almost anyone anticipated. In Q2 2026, the company reported orders of $24.2 billion, up 88% organically, with gas power equipment backlog and slot reservation agreements growing from 100 to 116 GW. The total backlog now sits at $176 billion. That backlog is revenue locked in before a single turbine ships.

GE Vernova remains on track to deliver 20 GW of annual gas turbine output in the third quarter of 2026, with 24 GW targeted for 2028 and actions underway to reach 30 GW by 2030. The capacity ramp is not speculative. Customers are already paying for slots years in advance.

Why Wall Street Is Paying Attention

GEV shares returned 60.1% over the year to October 8, 2026, easily outpacing the 16.3% return for the S&P 500. That outperformance is grounded in numbers, not excitement. Management raised its 2026 free cash flow guidance to a range of $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion, up from $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion. Few companies double their free cash flow guidance mid-year. GE Vernova just did it.

Of 35 Wall Street analysts who have issued ratings over the last twelve months, 28 rate GEV a buy or strong buy, with two sell ratings. The consensus price target implies roughly 17% upside from the October 8, 2026 close of $998.73. Those targets were set before Thursday’s Venture Global announcement added another potential 10 GW to the order pipeline.

What’s Driving the Opportunity

The Venture Global deal matters beyond its size because of what it signals about how AI infrastructure is being built. Venture Global said the expansion would place no additional demand on the public electric grid or public water utilities, using incremental dedicated on-site infrastructure instead. Hyperscalers and LNG operators are no longer waiting for utilities to solve the power shortage for them. They are contracting directly with equipment manufacturers and building their own generation. GE Vernova sits at the center of every one of those deals.

Venture Global said it currently expects to place its first power island purchase order by the end of 2026. In its SEC filing describing the agreements, the company said it expects initial power generation from the first power island to be targeted for late 2028 or early 2029. That timeline lines up cleanly with GE Vernova’s manufacturing ramp, meaning the company should be able to fulfill without stretching capacity it does not yet have.

What Could Go Wrong

The valuation is not cheap. At roughly $926 per share and a market cap around $250 billion as of October 16, 2026, investors are paying for execution that must continue without a stumble. Bears point to a Q2 adjusted EBITDA margin that was a focal point for investor concern, even as the company raised full-year cash flow guidance. The Wind segment remains a persistent drag. Management has guided for Wind EBITDA losses of approximately $400 million in 2026. Tariff exposure is real: the company has guided for $250 million to $350 million in global tariff costs in 2026. And the Venture Global frame agreement is exactly that, a frame. Orders must be confirmed, and some of the sixteen units may never be placed.

The Bottom Line

The power deficit driving AI infrastructure spending is not going away, and no company is better positioned to fill it at scale than GE Vernova. Venture Global says this expansion builds on 4.5 gigawatts of existing Island Mode modular, gas-fired generation that has and will continue to supply power to its facilities. Thursday’s agreement is a continuation of a relationship that is already generating revenue, not a speculative bet on one that might. With a $176 billion backlog, free cash flow guidance roughly double what it was earlier this year, and now one of the largest off-grid compute power expansions announced to date, GEV is a clear way to own the power build-out today.
